This is a painting which I bought in Hong Kong. The painter is unknown and it depicts the everyday atmosphere of a traditional market in Hong Kong. The painter used thick oil paints to create his strokes and they have a fast and fleeting feel to it, as if to show the hectic lifestyle of Hong Kong people. From this painting, I can feel a clashing of old culture with new modern culture brought forth through the combination of vibrant colours in the middle area of the painting, while dark blue and black frames it at the sides. I used three different ambient sounds as the background sounds interweaving with the main sound loop. The main sound is a Japanese Koto virtual instrument sound, slowly playing in the early part of the soundscape, with reverb as if to de-emphasize it and emphasize more on the ambient sounds of people haggling in the markets. Then, at the middle of the soundscape, the Japanese Koto sound takes centre stage, plays louder with slow drum beats and glass clinks playing in repeated intervals. At the end of the soundscape, the Japanese Koto sound is distorted and the drum beats stop, giving the feeling 'life goes on', whilst the ambient sound becomes more chaotic and hectic. This indicates that tradition is being slowly gobbled up by modernization.
Well i can safely say that this is the first piece of music i have ever composed in my life. Sorry for the crappy quality, i can't be bothered to upload other than mp4 format.
