Putting Things Into Perspective

today i went to gerai makan and ordered tandoori and nan. as i was eating before i drive back to putrajaya for the weekend, i sat there and observed the workers at the warung. It's Haji Tapah. These guys came from India or Bangladesh i think. This particular guy, has been there since before i went to university. He's the one in charge of the tandoori and nan.

This guy is doing the same thing over and over again for how many years already? I think about 7 years. And FYI, Haji Tapah opens everyday. Closes at around 4-5 a.m.

Wow, and i thought to myself. Is he happy? Is he actually happy. What about his family. He surely misses them. How much is his pay. What does he envision himself in 10 years time?

These are the questions we can throw to ourselves because simply, we have choices and opportunities in life that he did not. He is just working to keep moving on, provide for himself and his family far away ( i presume). What about when he falls sick? What will happen to him.

And we think our life's a big bore? Always stressing out at the mere sight of small problems. I should make a mental note and remember this for a long time.

At my work place, the security guards are mostly from Nepal. There is one particular guy, i think is older than my father. I feel sorry for him. These foreign workers, the ones who work diligently and not resort to crimes for quick cash, are for me very respectable. It's not easy doing what they are doing. Going far away from home. Working . And locals treating them a caste below.

I remembered one time i saw this episode on KBS World, 2 days and 1 night i think, about the foreign workers in Korea. They went and searched for their family members from Nepal, India, Myanmar. and brought them to Korea secretly. and then the hosts asks the workers, i think 5 of them, on how much they miss their family and all. 1 worker from Bangladesh i think, even missed his father's funeral, because the cost to return back home was too expensive. Damn. That was heart wrenching. I cried that day. I never really got into 2 days and 1 night, but that Foreign Worker's Special episode was the best and meaningful to date for me.

there's a lot to think about, ponder and reflect. sometimes it's nice to be lost in your own thoughts..
